Laura Louise "Buck" Hughes

Laura Louise "Buck" Hughes passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at the age of 97.  Visitation will be 1:00 to 2:00 PM Saturday, June 25, 2022, at Parker-Jacobs Funeral Home, 141 E. 3rd Street in Baird. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM in the Parker-Jacobs Funeral Home Chapel, with Chaplain Charles Goodnight officiating.  Burial will be in Ross Cemetery.  

Laura was born November 24, 1924 to Loyd Rocky and Emma Hughes. She was given the nickname “Buck” at an early age by her father. She was a lifelong resident of Baird and graduated from Baird High School in 1942. She was a member of the Baird United Methodist Church. During World War II, she worked in aircraft construction in San Diego, California. She later worked for ten years at Miller’s Food Store in Baird. Laura loved flowers, gardening and animals - especially cats. She cared for two grandmothers, a grandfather and her mother in the family home for many years. She often cooked food for friends and relatives, and made everyone happy to be around her.

Survivors include two nephews and their wives, Lloyd Ray and Evelyn Hughes of Baird and Harold H. (Hal) and Pamella Miller of Abilene, as well as numerous grandnephews, grandnieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father and mother; her brother Matthew Loyd (M.L.) Hughes of Baird, and three sisters, Ruth Hughes and Helen Virginia Miller of Baird and Austella Marie Cargal of Abilene; sister-in-law Earlene Hughes, brothers-in-law Harold H. Miller, Sr. And Morris E. “Bill” Cargal of Abilene; and close friend of many years, C.R. Farmer of Eula.
