Martha (Work) George

Martha George, a longtime Abilene and Baird resident, passed away on September 20, 2021. Martha was the daughter of Beulah and Bill Work. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, a daughter, Jo Lynn Chandler, and three siblings.

Martha graduated from Abilene High School as the valedictorian of her class and received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Texas. She briefly taught at Texas Tech and McMurry University before becoming a high school and elementary teacher, teaching math and science for many years. She enjoyed volunteering for schools and churches and shared her life and faith generously with others.

Martha is survived by four children, fourteen grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

A private ceremony with family will be held to honor Martha’s life. For those who would like to remember Martha, the family suggests memorials to Wycliffe Bible Translators, Gideons International, or Ben Richey Boys Ranch.
